Chief George Stephens of the North Garden Volunteer Fire Company (NGVFC) was the first responder to the scene of my accident. He and his crew, which arrived soon after he did, ensured no further harm came to me before loading me in an ambulance.
A couple of weeks ago, just over five months after the accident, I visited my saviors at the NGVFC. At that time I gave them this letter of appreciation:
On March 28, 2021, the North Garden Fire Company responded to a 911 call from just a few miles up Plank Rd. When they arrived they found me in a heap among tree limbs with a bicycle on top. At that time I had no feeling below my shoulders. Your professional and caring response saved my life and put me on a path to recovery that some have called miraculous. I am sure it wouldn’t have been that way if not for your dedication and training—you handled my crisis in exactly the right way. It has been 5 months since my accident and I am well on my way to a full recovery. My appreciation to the men and women of this fire station cannot be adequately expressed!

Unfortunately, when I visited to get this picture only a few of my heroes were there, but these men and women represent the dedication and selflessness of every member of this department.

Yep. I'm grateful to them, too, for what they did for you.
Glad to hear you finally got to thank your heroes. Your roadside angels!
I'm grateful to see some of the faces of the group who saved my brother's life -- and, maybe even moreso, I'm grateful that their prompt arrival and careful attendance after his accident opened the door to his recovery. To those faces missing in the photo, I hope to see you in the future. Your service is no less appreciated.
While my brother's commitment to health and his dedication to following the recommendatons of his doctors and therapists are responsible for a great degree of his phenomenal recovery, had the "heroes" not been there promptly there would have been no opportunity for recovery. Please recognize my deepfelt gratitude.
